Part 5: “Ring Twice, Hang Once” [Cozy Horror-Thriller]

Dear Reader,
Find part 4 here.

A buzzing in Magda’s ears pulled her up from unconsciousness. The buzzing irritated her. She shook her head with immediate regret because she discovered she had a splitting headache. She raised her hands to massage her forehead, but something stopped her. Her eyes flew open.

Magda lay on something cold and rough. It was dark, but a dim light flickered from some place. Struggling, she felt something holding her down.

What happened? How did I get here?

Kicking and twisting fiercely, she tried to sit up, but cruelly, a rope stretched across her neck, holding her down completely. Her gagged mouth made the sounds she uttered faint and useless.

The buzzing she heard as she came out of unconsciousness was clearer. Voices muttered in unison. In here. With her. Twisting her head to look around, she looked for the source of the flickering light. She followed the light trail down and realized she lay on a raised platform of sorts. Spreading her hands, Magda felt cold stone. The flickering light must be a candle. And there was another one. And another.

An unexpected sound of movement nearby stilled her. Her frightened heartbeat pounded in her ears and her breath grew rapid. Her chest throbbed with the force of her heart, making her tremble violently. Someone was walking around! She felt, rather than heard, whoever stood near. A chill followed them as they walked around the stone platform.

She remembered this chill. She had felt this coldness in her house. Frantically, Magda tried to remember what had happened before she woke up.

She was leaving the library.

Someone was chasing her.

She remembered something hard and heavy fell on her.

That’s all she could remember.

The chill stopped moving. She felt it emanating beside her, near her head. Magda whimpered as she tried to move against the rope to the opposite side, as far away from it as possible.

Magda sensed the presence leaning over her. She shut her eyes tightly. She could only describe the feeling as icy. The chill spread up over her arm, to her shoulder, up her neck, and toward her mind.

It took her from this place to a more horrifying place.

She never knew it when Darryl charged in with his talisman to rescue her.
